Port Elizabeth police said, “excellent collaboration” between members of the Algoa Park community led to the quick arrest of an attempted rape suspect on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said the incident happened in St Leonards Road when the suspect approached two women who were walking with a two-year-old child.
She said they handed over the child’s bag to the suspect after he demanded money.
Naidu said when as there was nothing of significant value to him in the bag, he threatened the women with a screwdriver.
“He then threatened the 36-year-old and threw her to the ground and pulled off her pants. The older sister ran to get help,” she said.
Naidu said Revona Pienaar, a member of the Algoa Park Community Policing Forum and her husband, Gert, chased after the suspect with other community members on their heels.
“The suspect approximately 36-years-old was apprehended by the community. He was detained on a charge of attempted rape and is expected to appear in court soon,” Naidu said.
