Port Elizabeth police dog Jack has once come good, helping the K9 unit arrest a 27-year-old man for house robbery in Walmer.
Police said K9 unit members were patrolling the area between Heugh Road and 8th Avenue when they noticed suspicious activity near the 8th Avenue Centre at about 2 am on Tuesday morning.
"They stopped their vehicle but were unable to locate the two people they had spotted earlier, they, however, noticed that the lock on the gate was forced open," said spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg.
She said dog handler, Sergeant Volente Baatjies, released Jack to assist in finding the men.
"As they approached the gate, an unknown man jumped out from a trench and attempted to flee. The member warned the suspect to stop but he continued running and soon after Jack apprehended him," said Janse Van Rensburg.
She said the officers inspected the property and discovered that air pipes worth about R1000 were damaged.
The suspect is due to appear at the Port Elizabeth Magistrates court soon on a charge of housebreaking and theft.
