PE Parents hand over petition to Department of Education

Parents of learners from Port Elizabeth's Northern Areas have presented a petition to the Department of Education.

This, as the schools closure enters its third week.

Parents and school governing bodies decided to close the schools in protest over teacher shortages and other long-standing demands against the Eastern Cape Education Department.

Marlon Daniels, who was one of the leaders of the protest group, addressed the parents outside the offices of the Department of Education on Monday morning.

"Most of the schools within the Northern Areas of Port Elizabeth are entering it's third week of no school this has come about as the parents have decided that they will not send their kids to school until demands are met and implemented.Parents across the broader Metro are following the trend of refraining from sending the kids to schools. These demands have been coming on from many years without receiving the attention it deserves hence these drastic action by parents" He said.

Earlier, we reported that the Eastern Cape Education District Executive Committee is visiting Port Elizabeth on Monday, to help fast-track and resolve issues which have led to the disruptions of schools in the northern areas.

The Department of Education says the Committee will also reinforce the work of it's task team.
