A suspect who made a daring escape through an open window at the Walmer police station in Port Elizabeth has been rearrested in Aliwal North.
Colonel Priscilla Naidu says Walmer Police were on routine patrol on the 21st of September, when they noticed two suspicious-looking men walking in Adam Road, Charlo, around midday.
Naidu says the officers proceeded to question the men as the area is a hot spot for house-breakings.
The men could not account for their presence in the area and were taken to the police station.
Colonel Naidu says while the detective was verifying the fingerprints of one of the suspects, he jumped through an open window and fled.
His fingerprints have since linked him to seven housebreakings and the murder of an elderly woman in Kamma Park.
The 84-year-old Ann Smit was brutally attacked with a hammer in her home in March and died from her injuries a month later in hospital.
Eye-witnesses saw three suspects fleeing the scene.
In June police made a breakthrough in the case when they arrested a 21-year-old man in Missionvale who was also positively linked to the crime scene.
Naidu says the re-arrested suspect will appear in court soon and will also be charged for escaping from lawful custody.
