Port Elizabeth police have opened a case under the Animal Protection Act after two people were attacked by three pitbulls in Rowallan Park.
Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the incident happened in Rowan Street, Rowallan Park at about three o'clock on Saturday afternoon.
She says an unknown man in his 50's was viciously attacked by three pitbull terriers and is in a serious condition in hospital.
A resident was also bitten by the dogs as he tried to stop them from further attacking the man.
Both men were rushed to Livingston Hospital for treatment.
Colonel Naidu says police arrived to scenes of chaos in the street and had to fire three warning shots to ward off the dogs.
She says the owner of the home was not at home at the time of the incident. The dogs were removed by Animal Cruelty and Investigations are continuing.
