Two men were sentenced in the Port Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Thursday after robbing a woman of her cellphone on Christmas day in 2017.
Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the 24-year-old Ayanda Skhoboyi and his 22-year-old accomplice Masixole Dyantyi were sentenced to 14 and eight years respectively.
She says they were both armed when they approached a woman at a bus stop in Motherwell, demanding her phone.
Naidu says she screamed for help and her husband came to her rescue.
He chased Skhoboyi with his car and knocked him over when he pointed his firearm.
She says he was then trapped under the car.
A policeman who was on his way to work stopped at the scene to assist the couple.
Police confiscated a firearm and ammunition during the arrest.
Dyantyi was arrested later and the stolen phone, valued at R4 889 was recovered.
