A Port Elizabeth man has drowned while swimming in the sea at Brighton Beach.
The National Sea Rescue Institute says the incident happened on Saturday afternoon, while the 55-year old was swimming with friends.
Spokesperson, Craig Lambinon says various rescue teams, including the police, were dispatched to the scene, and a sea and shoreline search was launched.
He says eye-witnesses reported seeing the man disappear under water.
Lambinon says his body was later located and recovered from the surf zone, and paramedics commenced CPR, but after extensive efforts, the man was declared dead.
Police have opened an inquest docket.
