PE man dies after plunging from ship's ladder

A Port Elizabeth man has died after plunging several metres from a ship's boarding ladder on Saturday.

He was identified as Henry Kemp, a Deputy Sherriff who was busy executing an arrest warrant for the vessel Blue Marlin when the tragic accident occurred.

The National Ports Authority said that he was transferred from a pilot boat, however, while boarding the ship's pilot ladder he fell into the water.

Kemp's body was retrieved by the crew but unfortunately, he had died.

“All of us at Transnet National Ports Authority are shocked and deeply saddened by the incident, and our thoughts are with the loved ones of the deceased at this time, said Shulami Qalinge, TNPA Chief Executive.

NSRI Port Elizabeth station commander Ian Gray said that their duty crew was activated at 7.20pm on Saturday evening to assist at a Monrovia registered ship, the Blue Marlin One, at anchorage off-shore of the Port of Ngqura, following reports of a man overboard.

An investigation into Kemp's death is underway.
