PE man commits suicide after shooting neigbours in Bethelsdorp

A 60-year-old man had taken his own life after hostage negotiators were unable to convince him to surrender to them in Bethelsdorp, Port Elizabeth.

Captain Johan Rheeder says the drama began at about 6.30 on Wednesday morning when the man shot and injured his two neighbours in Broadway Street, extension 27 - Bethelsdorp.

The two men, aged 52 and 40 were taken to hospital.

Captain Rheeder says after shooting his neighbours, apparently over a financial disagreement, the man then walked about a kilometre to his brother's house in Limbert Street where he holed himself up.

There was no-one else in the house at the time.

Police were called and Rheeder says hostage negotiators spent the next two hours tryng to negotiate with the suspect.

Tragically, the man turned the gun on himself and shot himself dead inside his brother's house.

Police are investigating two cases of attempted murder and have also opened an inquest docket into the man's death.

He may not be named at this stage.
