A 50-year-old Port Elizabeth man is under police guard in hospital, after he allegedly shot his estranged 36-year old wife in the head.
Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg says it is alleged that Humewood police responded to a complaint of domestic violence at a house in Brighton Street in Summerstrand on Saturday.
She says the couple was in the process of a divorce, and the victim and her sister went to the house to fetch some of her belongings when they were confronted by her husband.
Janse Van Rensburg says a shot was fired, wounding the woman in the head.
While paramedics were attending to the woman, the suspect locked himself in the bedroom until police arrived and he handed himself over.
He was arrested on a charge of attempted murder.
Captain Janse Van Rensburg says while detectives were still processing the crime scene, they found syringes in the room where he had locked himself in.
She says it is suspected that he might have injected himself with an unknown substance.
The suspect's wife was taken to a separate hospital for treatment.
