A 14 year old Port Elizabeth school pupil was attacked in broad daylight on Wednesday and was found lying unconscious on the side of the road by a fellow learner.
A teacher was alerted and the girl was rushed to hospital.
The name of the school nor that of the girl may be released as police are investigating the possibility that she was raped.
Police spokesperson, Captain Johan Rheeder, says the victim told police that she was attacked from behind and can only remember waking up in hospital.
The incident happened at a quarter-past 8 in the morning, a mere 800 metres from the school premises.
There have been no arrests at this stage and Captain Rheeder appealed to learners, especially young girls, to avoid walking on their own if at all possible.
