The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality said it was working hard towards reducing the backlog in handing over title deeds to housing beneficiaries.
Executive Mayor, Athol Trollip, together with municipal officials handed over title deeds to five beneficiaries in Zosa Street in Korsten on Monday.
He said the Zosa Street housing project was completed in 2011 by the previous administration but there was some paper work that needed to be completed before title deeds could be handed over.
Trollip said they would be be handing over up to 1200 deeds to home owners this year, adding that they were looking at ways of speeding up the process.
"We are also looking at more affordable and quicker transferring of title deeds. I am meeting with some companies who have new electronic systems to make sure that we can get the title deeds. It costs a lot of money, you have to go through the deeds office, you have to go through the registry, you have to go through an attorney and that costs a lot of money. Transferring of property costs a lot of money so we are trying to reduce that cost and we want to do it more cost effectively," he said.
Meanwhile, one of the beneficiaries who received a title deed, Donovan Plaatjies, spoke to the media after the hand over.
"I am very happy now I can give this to my children as a here is something that you can have if i'm not there. They own something now," he said.
