Two gang members have been arrested for murder while they were appearing on other serious charges in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s court.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu says Riaan Baartman and Darryn Wentzel, both aged 25, handed themselves over to police in January for allegedly shooting a police officer during a chase in Shauderville in November of last year.
She says the officer was hit in the head and survived the incident.
Colonel Naidu says on the 7th of November 2019 the officer was shot when they responded to a fatal shooting at a house in Lawler Street.
Two suspects in a vehicle shot and killed the 24-year-old Leonard Roberts after calling him out by his name.
The men fled the scene in a vehicle which was later spotted by police.
Colonel Naidu says when they saw the police they fired shots and the officer was hit.
She says Baartman and Wentzel appeared in court on Monday on an attempted murder charge and it was during this appearance that they were arrested at court for the murder of Leonard Roberts.
They will be back in court on the 28th of July for both these cases.
