PE gang blows up drop safe while staff are tied up

Port Elizabeth police are on the manhunt for 8 suspects who were involved in an armed robbery at the Caltex Garage in Perseverance, Port Elizabeth.

Police Spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge says the incident happened shortly after 3 pm on Wednesday afternoon.

According to eye witnesses, the suspects parked their Quantum bus opposite the garage and later entered the store. Beetge says only then did they produce firearms and asked for money from the drop safe.

Two of the tellers were taken to the toilets where they were tied up and locked in.

Beetge says moments later an explosion was heard when the suspects blew up the drop safe inside the shop.

They fled with a substantial amount of money in a different vehicle, a Nissan bakkie, which was found abandoned later in Zwide.

Beetge says anybody with information must contact the Kwazakhele police department.

No shots were fired and nobody was injured in the incident.

Police are investigating a charge of armed business robbery and could add more charges later in connection with the explosives used in the robbery.
