Port Elizabeth police have confirmed that a football fan was killed when a shot went off during the pitch invasion at the end of the Absa Premiership match between Kaizer Chiefs and Chippa United on Saturday.
Police spokesperson, Captain Johan Rheeder, says a policeman had tried to protect players from the invading fans when two men allegedly tried to take his firearm from him.
He says they managed to wrestle it from the policeman but the firearm was still attached by a strap to the policeman's belt.
Rheeder says its alleged that one of the suspects cocked the firearm during the struggle with the policeman and a shot went off hitting a person nearby.
The identity of the victim is not yet known.
Rheeder says no arrests were made and the incident will be investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.
