Police arrested three suspects and recovered a 9mm pistol in Bethelsdorp, Port Elizabeth.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said members of the PE Flying Squad were patrolling in Standford road on Thursday when they noticed a white Nissan Bakkie driving around with no number plate.
Naidu said one of the suspects pointed a firearm at the members and a chase ensued followed by a shootout between the police and the suspects.
She added that the driver of the bakkie lost control and veered into bushes.
The suspects are facing charges of attempted murder, pointing a firearm, possession of a suspected stolen vehicle and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The vehicle was reported missing early in May and police will probe whether these suspects are linked to robberies committed in the Bethelsdorp area.
