Parents of learners in Port Elizabeth's Northern Areas have threatened to bring the Northern Areas to a standstill on Monday to press home their demands around education issues affecting schools.
Ronnie Mathys, the chairperson of the Northern Areas Education Forum, said this decision was taken at a meeting of parents on Friday.
"For quite a while the Forum, representing the parents, have been in negotiations and talks with the Department up to the highest level and it seems like nothing is forthcoming. The parents have decided to add a bit of impetus to the protest action to draw attention to the seriousness of the whole issue," he said.
Mathys said that parents will be working in conjunction with the taxi assoications in the Northern Arears to "close down the Northern Areas."
Schools in the city's Northern Areas were closed this past week as part of the ongoing protests about teachers shortages, the lack appointments as well as budget matters, amongst other issues.
Mathys says another meeting will be held on Tuesday with education authorities on these matters.
In an earlier meeting it emerged that some schools had neglected to submit their documents to the Education Department on time to facilitate teacher recruitment.
