PE driver shot in buttocks during armed robbery

A Port Elizabeth driver is currently in hospital after being shot in the buttocks during an armed robbery.

Police Captain Johan Rheeder says the 35-year-old driver responded to a call-out in Extention 30 in Bethelsdorp at about 1 am on Tuesday morning.

He says the driver picked up two passengers and drove them to Schauderville where he was asked to wait for them in order to take them back to Bethelsdorp.

Captain Rheeder says when the driver asked for his money, one of the suspects got out and threatened him with a firearm while his accomplice searched the vehicle.

The driver grabbed the firearm from the suspect and a shot went off hitting him in his buttocks.

The suspects managed to flee with a phone, the car keys and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Police are investigating a case of armed robbery and attempted murder.

No arrests have been made.
