A Port Elizabeth cyclist is off a ventilator in hospital after suffering horrific injuries in an attack on Marine Drive in Port Elizabeth last week.

The 55-year-old Werner Wiehart suffered seven broken ribs, a punctured lung, a cracked pelvis and a cracked collar bone when he was jumped by at least six men near Schoenmakerskop on Friday.

His attackers left him lying in the middle of the road and made off with his wallet, cell phone and high-end Trek road bike, one of only a handful in the country.

The former municipal employee’s wife sent a message to AlgoaFM News on Monday that he is now breathing on his own but that his recovery will still take some time.

Wiehart, who was a National road cyclist in his younger years, said while his left side is broken he is hopeful to make a  full recovery.

He extended his appreciation to everyone who had sent him well wishes.

Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, confirmed that Walmer detectives were still investigating the incident and that the silver Trek road bike had not yet been recovered.
