A mountain biker was allegedly attacked at the corner of Sardinia Bay Road and Victoria Drive in Port Elizabeth on Thursday morning, around sunrise just after 7 am.

A local businessman who was riding with his son told Algoa FM News the incident had happened about 400 metres in front of him and that he had not personally witnessed the attack.

Another couple told him they had seen the mountain biker hauled off his bike and dragged towards the bushes before the suspect ran off.

They had clearly disturbed the attack, the first of its kind to be reported since the lockdown regulations were eased to accommodate exercise between 6 am and 9 am.

The identity of the victim is not yet known, although the businessman told Algoa FM News he did see him riding off on his bike.

Police say they have not received a report on the incident.

The Victoria Drive Area in the vicinity of the Sardinia Bay turnoff and all the way down to Schoenmakerskop has been a trouble-spot over the years with a number of incidents of this nature, including visiting ironman triathletes being attacked.
