Magistrate Mputumi Mpofu has denied an application by the defence for a special review of certain evidence in the trial of convicted fraudster Portia Sizani in the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crimes Court.
The wife of South Africa's ambassador to Germany and former ANC Chief Whip Stone Sizani was found guilty in March on 15 counts of fraud and nine counts of money laundering.
During 2009 and 2010, Sizani defrauded the Eastern Cape education department out of more than R1.2 million by processing several fraudulent applications for Grade R teaching posts.
Her legal team wanted a section of the State's case, which deals with the CV's of the teachers she used in the scam, to be placed on special review - but this was denied by Magistrate Mpofu in court this morning.
Defence attorney, advocate Johan Wessels, immediately requested a copy of the judgement to consider the way forward
Bail was extended and the matter is postponed to the 27th of August.
