PE cops wound and arrest two suspects following supermarket robbery

Port Elizabeth police arrested two suspects and recovered three firearms following a brazen armed robbery at a supermarket in Bluewater Bay early on Thursday night.

The drama, replete with high-speed car chase and shootout through the streets of New Brighton, came to a halt when the robbers hijacked getaway car became wedged between two houses in a narrow alley.

Police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge said four men entered the Bluewater Bay Spar at around 19.20pm Thursday and began shooting in the air before cleaning out the all the cashiers and taking cartons of cigarettes.

“They fled in a silver Audi, which was spotted shortly thereafter in Fergusson Road, New Brighton by Flying Squad members,” said Beetge.

“A car chase ensued and there was an exchange of gunshot fire in the process. This ended when the driver of the Audi attempted to drive between two houses and got stuck. Five suspects jumped out of the vehicle still shooting at police,” he said.

Captain Beetge said that the SAPS members returned fire wounding a 26-year-old suspect at the vehicle. He was placed under arrest while a 9mm pistol was also seized.

“Another suspect, aged 22, was also wounded and arrested in the premises of a nearby house while he attempted to evade arrest. Three suspects managed to get away”.

Beetge said police found two more firearms and cartons of cigarettes inside the vehicle which he said was hijacked in New Brighton last month.

The search for the remaining suspects is still underway
