PE cop who had affair with gangster off to prison

Convicted former Port Elizabeth police member, Alicia Beeming, has been sentenced to 4 years direct imprisonment for defeating the ends of justice.

The court gave her 30 days from Thursday to make arrangements for the care and custody of her 3 children while she is incarcerated.

Passing sentence in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court, Magistrate Onke Myataza, said a custodial sentence was the only option in this case.

He added that he was satisfied that Beeming's children would be well looked after while she serves time in jail.

The 34-year-old previously pleaded guilty to a charge of defeating the ends of justice after she was found to be shielding alleged gangster Hans Jordaan, who was being sought by police while she worked in the police's gang unit.

It subsequently emerged she was in a relationship with him.

During the trial, the court heard that Beeming's actions had an enormously negative effect on the gang unit as well as its relationship with the local community.
