A 32-year-old man who raped his girlfriend's daughter on two separate occasions has been jailed in the Port Elizabeth Regional Court for an effective 18 years.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said they welcomed the sentence as the country marked the end of the campaign of 16 days of activism of no violence against women and children.
She said the accused first raped his girlfriend's daughter, who was 11 at the time, in February 2018 while the mother was asleep.
"He was arrested, appeared in court and was released on R500 bail. In January 2019, both the mother and child failed to attend court and the case was subsequently struck off the roll," Naidu said.
She said in March this year, he committed the same offence and was arrested and held in custody until the finalisation of both cases.
Naidu said he was sentenced to 15 years each on both counts of rape, three years for sexual assault and a further two years for exposing or displaying pornography to a child.
She said the rape and other sentences will run concurrently meaning that that the suspect will spend an effective 18 years in prison.
