PE angler bitten by shark

An angler was bitten by a shark in Port Alfred while fishing on Saturday.

The National Sea Rescue Institute says 42-year old Lionel McDougall from Port Elizabeth, was bitten on his left knee, ankle and hand by a ragged-tooth shark that he had caught near Rufane's River.

NSRI station commander Juan Pretorius says he is in a stable condition in hospital after receiving treatment from fellow anglers and the NSRI.

Pretorius says McDougall was taking part in a rock and surf angling competition at the time of the incident.

McDougall had hooked a male ragged-tooth shark that measured more than two metres in length, and while attempting to recover the shark, by grabbing it by the tail, it turned around and bitten his left leg.

Pretorius said a shark tooth found embedded in his knee was to be surgically removed.

He says the shark was measured and released back into the ocean.
