Police in Gqeberha have opened an inquest docket after a 38-year-old patient died at the Livingstone Hospital in Gqeberha.
It has since been established that the patient jumped to his death from the 5th floor of the hospital on Thursday.
According to a statement issued by the Department of Health, the patient was admitted to a general ward and acted without forewarning.
Acting Spokesperson for the Department Yonela Dekeda says according to the nurses on duty, the deceased allegedly proceeded to take a urinal metal jug and ran towards the window using the jug to break the glass window.
The patient then threw himself through the hole he created.
She says the incident was responded to immediately and reported to the relevant officials.
The family of the deceased, whose name was not released, was informed immediately after the incident had occurred.
The MEC for Health in the Eastern Cape Nomakhosazana Meth has sent her deepest condolences to the family.
