A fourth Algoa Bus has been torched by disgruntled mobs across Nelson Mandela Bay in the last 24 hours, following a protest over housing and electricity issues.
In the latest incident at 7 AM on Tuesday, protestors pelted a passenger bus with stones before setting it alight in Sansouci Road in Khayamnandi, behind Despatch.
Police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge, said the irate crowd dispersed soon after, leaving passengers stranded.
Protestors are demanding a legal electricity connection on the R75 and Westville informal settlement nearby.
The protest turned violent on Monday and six vehicles including three Algoa Buses were torched.
Beetge said shortly before 9 pm on Monday, a bus broke down on the R75 opposite Bayland and was set alight shortly after a company towing vehicle arrived, which was also partially torched.
A sedan, a light delivery vehicle, and a minibus were amongst those vehicles pelted with stones before being set alight while two other Algoa Buses were left completely charred on Monday.
He said no drivers were injured in the incidents.
Meanwhile, municipality spokesperson, Mthubanzi Mniki, told Algoa FM News that supply chain processes were delaying the process of providing electricity to at least 200 shacks.
He said the work will however resume as soon as the material including boards and service distribution boxes were made available.
Mniki condemned the ongoing protest.
