Intercape
Intercape bus company is appealing to the newly appointed Transport Minister, Sindisiwe Chikunga, to urgently intervene after a passenger was wounded when a bus came under fire in the Eastern Cape.
Company CEO, Johann Ferreira, said the incident happened on Wednesday night in the Penhoek Pass on the N6 toward Bloemfontein. He said the bus had left Gqeberha for Pretoria.
He said the wounded passenger was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Ferreira also said that Intercape staff and security were also repeatedly threatened by taxi operators in Dutywa, where he said the N2 was blocked for several hours.
He accused SAPS of being missing in action, which he said had emboldened taxi associations and operators.
“I am openly pleading with all South Africans to stand up and call on Government to put a stop to this anarchy. How can we allow criminals to shoot up a coach carrying innocent people?”
Ferreira said this lawlessness is not only about Intercape but affects multiple sectors as well as members of the public caught in the crossfire.
He said they approached the High Court in Makanda once again today with an urgent application to compel police and national and provincial transport authorities to comply with earlier court orders to provide for the safety and security of Intercape's drivers and passengers.
