A 35-year-old man travelling by bus from the Eastern Cape to Gauteng was arrested in Bloemfontein for possession of abalone.
Spokesperson Captain Christopher Singo says the bus's security official received information about a passenger on board who had abalone.
He says the Hawks team in Bloemfontein was activated, and the suspect was arrested at the Tourist Centre, where the bus made a routine stop.
Singo says the man had a box containing 179 units of abalone, which was seized at the scene and estimated to be worth R26 500.
He says the suspect had no explanation for the abalone in his box and was arrested.
