An alleged robber was shot by police in George on Monday.
Spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie confirmed the incident.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) will take over the investigation.
It is alleged that the man was involved in a robbery in Rosemoor on Monday afternoon before police were called out to a house in the area.
Pojie says the suspect then tried to attack a police officer with a panga, which resulted in the cop firing two shots towards the man.
According to the George Herald police did not immediately notice that the suspect had been shot and took him to the Conville police station to be booked in.
It is there where the man collapsed from a gunshot wound to his stomach.
He was declared dead at the station.
