The Eastern Cape Health Department said 120 school children were admitted to a hospital in Komani after taking ill.
Spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo, said 34 learners, aged between eight and 15, from a school in Mlungisi were transported to the Frontier Hospital.
He said they had complained of abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting.
Kupelo said more learners from a second school in Komani “suffered from an alleged food- borne disease.”
Tests are being done to determine the cause of their illness.
“In all, 120 pupils presented signs of itchiness, some had shortness of breath. Some had high temperature, others vital signs were normal,” Kupelo said.
He said all the children were in “stable condition.”
