The community of Dutywa in the Eastern Cape is calling for the re-arrest of a suspect who allegedly stabbed his girlfriend to death but is out on free bail while awaiting trial.
The Sonke Gender Justice Network, which is closely monitoring the case, has been joined by the Commission for Gender Equality, in calling on the police to place 29-year old Nkosana Xabidiya in custody pending the conclusion of the trial.
Twenty-seven-year-old Sandiswa Mhauli was hauled out of a stationary mini-bus taxi and stabbed to death by her former boyfriend on the 10th of December last year, the same day that she had obtained a protection order against him.
Sonke's Patrick Godana says the community is angered at the level of poor policing in the area.
"The community is really angered by the level of poor policing in the area because it has been a kind of a norm and practise that cases of violence against women will not reach that far. Even in this one of Sandiswa Mhlauli it was evident that the investigator in charge of the case had not done all the necessary steps of collecting necessary information," he said.
