Orphaned rhino calves taken to place of safety

Two young rhino calves who survived after their mothers were killed by poachers on an Eastern Cape game farm have been placed in a rhino orphanage for their safety.

According to Nick Fox, whose family own Sibuya Game Reserve, the three rhinos were shot at about 3:30am on Thursday morning.

Fox said two of the rhinos died on the scene and the third one was still alive however it's horn was also removed.

He added that the male bull was also darted but a vet was able to resuscitate the animal.

However Fox said the rhino was not in good shape and it would have to be closely monitored.

"We got a vet in very early this morning and he is up and about but he's not in good shape at all.We spent the rest of the morning capturing the two calves which we have now shipped of to a rhino orphanage. They will have to be bottle-fed.  They both suckling but the one is so small that it will have to be bottle-fed at this stage" he said.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Luvuyo Mjekula said police together with the rhino poaching unit were still searching for the suspects.

Mjekula said the police arrived earlier on Thursday morning and have been searching in and around the game reserve.

" At the moment there haven't been any arrests made, police are following leads and they are at the scene taking fingerprints. There has been no real update as to the arrests of the suspects, police are just trying to trace the suspects" he said.

Anyone who may have information on the poaching incident has been asked to contact the Port Alfred police.
