Opposition parties in NMB withdraw all motions Council

Opposition parties in Nelson Mandela Bay have withdrawn all six motions, including a motion of no confidence in Executive Mayor, Athol Trollip, at a Special Council meeting on Thursday.

The EFF, which proposed the motion of no confidence in Trollip, said they withdrew the motion because "there was no use in going into war when you know you are going to lose because you don't have the numbers."

They did, however, indicate that they will come back with another motion when the numbers are back "on their side".

The United Front said the decision to withdraw the motions was a collective one taken by the so-called 'black caucus' in Council.

Commenting on Thursday's development, DA Provincial leader Nqaba Bhanga, said in an interview that the opposition parties must stop "playing with governance and the work that they supposed to do in servicing the people of Nelson Mandela Bay.

He said residents of the Metro need a government and Council that takes them seriously and appealed to them to "stop wasting the resources of South Africa" so that service delivery can continue.

"With these frivolous motions behind us, the serious work of bringing change to Nelson Mandela Bay forges ahead under the DA-led coalition government. We have houses to build, roads to tar, toilets to install, jobs to create and an economy to grow - and forces against us will not prevail," he said.

Thursday's about-turn by the opposition comes a day after high-profile ANC councillor Andile Lungisa was jailed for an effective two years for assaulting DA councillor, Rano Kayser, with a glass jug during the infamous Council brawl of 2016.

Another ANC councillor, Bongo Nombiba, was also jailed for five years for fraud.

A DA councillor who is on trial for fraud was able to attend Thursday's proceedings after the magistrate initially indicated that he would not be given time-off from court to attend the Council meeting.
