The Eastern Cape Education Department is investigating reports of a school in the province where pupils allegedly only receive four hours of schooling per day.
This follows an oversight visit by the official opposition to the Alheit van der Merwe primary school in Maletswai.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) says the school had been left to fend for itself after a May 2021 fire, that gutted at least seven classrooms, several bathrooms, a computer laboratory and an admin block.
The party's Yusuf Cassim says due to the limited available resources, the school has had to split the learners, with some grades attending classes in the morning, and the remainder of pupils attending school in the afternoons.
He says this has also led to an inability to maintain discipline within the school grounds.
Provincial education spokesperson Malibongwe Mtima said he would provide the department's response as soon as possible.
