A 37-year-old man is expected to appear in the Cradock Magistrates Court on Friday following his arrest for transporting frozen abalone.
Police spokesperson Captain Lariane Jonker says the suspect and his alleged accomplice travelled in a convoy through Cradock and caught the attention of the Crime Prevention Unit.
She says police stopped the suspect in a Ford Ranger where they seized 783 kg of frozen abalone.
Captain Jonker says the second driver in a Toyota Hilux sped off in the direction of Hofmeyr and a high-speed chase ensued.
The bakkie was later found locked and abandoned in the town.
Police seized a ton of frozen de-shelled abalone that was handed over to the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in Gqeberha.
The value of the seized abalone is estimated to be R2 million.
One suspect is still on the run.
