Nelson Mandela University was mourning the loss of a student after a taxi “rammed” into a group of students, leaving one dead and several others injured.
“According to reports received by the University, a minibus taxi rammed into a group of about nine students in the early hours of Sunday morning, following the Freshers’ Carnival event that was held on campus on Saturday night,” the university said in a social media post.
“Mandela University is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of the student and extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and peers of the deceased student.
“Thoughts and prayers are also extended to the other victims of the accident, and we wish them all a speedy recovery.
“Counselling and other psychosocial support mechanisms have been made available for all students and staff affected by this tragedy,” Mandela University said.
Police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge, said a 22-year-old male was killed while ten others were injured.
He said of the injured, two were in critical condition, six others were seriously injured, while two others sustained minor injuries.
Beetge said the 24-year-old male driver was arrested and the vehicle was also impounded.
