Andy Kawa's alleged rapist takes the stand

The man who allegedly raped Gauteng woman Andy Kawa took to the stand in his own defence in the Gqeberha High Court on Friday.

Moses Gqesha denies raping Andy Kawa on 9 December 2010 along Kings Beach.

He has pleaded not guilty to rape, as well as charges of kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

It is the accused' version that he met "a woman" who offered him a job whilst he was busy doing his duties as a car guard.

He claims to have accepted the job and left with the woman and they eventually ended up along Kings Beach.

According to the accused, this was where he and the woman had consensual sexual intercourse.

By his estimation, the act lasted about 20 minutes.

Defence Advocate Xolile Bodlo led the accused to testify that when they were finished, he wiped himself with his t-shirt and tossed it into a nearby carriage.

He told the court he and the woman got dressed and that she paid him for his services with two R200 notes before parting ways.

Gqesha further testified about going in the direction of Something Good restaurant and going to a nearby shop for bread and cold drinks, which he consumed in a grassy area near McDonald's.

The court heard that the accused and the woman who he testified paid him to sleep with her never exchanged names.

To this day, he cannot recall what this woman looks like.

Kawa does not look familiar to him, he told the court.

When it was put to the accused that Kawa claimed he was the person who raped her, he said "maybe she was the one who gave it to me herself."

Judge Phillip Zilwa asked Gqesha what the "it" was.

He replied: "Gave me her vagina".

State Advocate Ismat Cerfontein will cross-examine the accused on Monday.
