Omotoso trial faces another delay

Chaotic scenes played out in front of the Gqeberha High Court on Monday, where Nigerian pastor Timothy Omotoso and his two co-accused made a brief appearance.

Omotoso, Lusanda Sulani and Zukiswa Sitho face more than 30 charges which include rape, sexual assault and human trafficking.

The drama unfolded as two opposing camps (members of Omotoso's church and members of the ANC Women's League) supporting both the accused and the victims protested outside court.

Other cases had to be temporarily suspended until the crowds dispersed.

Defence attorney Peter Daubermann applied to have a special entry made into the court record.

The entry pertains to Judge Irma Schoeman's findings that two state witnesses had perjured themselves.

Schoeman's findings relate to her judgment in the previous Section 174 application to have the charges dismissed against the accused.

Daubermann previously told the court that the entire trial and the evidence of the complainants were tainted by prosecutorial misconduct, but his application was unsuccessful.

The case was postponed to 29 November.
