Oil stops leaking on Kiani Satu

Western Cape, tourism MEC Alan Windy says the oil has stopped leaking from the cargo ship Kiani Satu, stranded at Walker Point at Buffels Bay near Knysna.

Windy visited the stricken bulk carrier on Thursday and said there had been a decrease in the amount of oil seen along the coastline.

The 168m-long bulk carrier ran aground at dawn last Thursday, after experiencing mechanical problems, forcing the captain and his 19-member crew to abandon ship.

The SA Maritime Safety Authority pumped the fuel oil from the ship's engine room to higher parts of the vessel on Thursday.

Samsa spokesman Captain Nigel Campbell, said the safest way to remove the oil from the ship would be to fly it off by helicopter in in plastic tanks.
