An off-duty Port Elizabeth policeman was killed and his older brother wounded in a shooting in Kwazakhele on Tuesday morning.
Eastern Cape Police said the incident in Nosidima Street while 34-year-old Sergeant Siyabonga Wakula and his two brothers were sitting outside their house.
“One of them went inside to check on the food that was cooking. While inside, he heard gunshots being fired,” said spokesperson, Colonel Sibongile Soci.
She said when he ran outside he found Siyabonga and his 56-year-old brother lying on the ground.
Soci said the policeman, who was stationed at SAPS Kabega Park, sustained multiple gunshot wounds while his older brother was wounded in both legs.
The suspects fled in a white Toyota Avanza and the motive for the attack was not known.
Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Liziwe Ntshinga, condemned the shooting and appealed to police members to be constantly vigilant.
