A search is underway for the gunman who shot and killed an off-duty policeman at Ezibileni in Komani this weekend.

Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Sibongile Soci, said the incident happened on Saturday night.

She said the 30-year-old Constable and his brother were on their way to Ezibileni when they stopped to give a hitchhiker a lift.  Soci said while approaching the township the policeman’s brother asked him to stop so that he could get out.

“As he alighted from the vehicle, he allegedly heard gunshots fired by the passenger (hitchhiker) hitting the deceased,” she said.

A case of murder is under investigation.

Eastern Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Liziwe Ntshinga has condemned the shooting and vowed that police will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the suspect is brought to book.
