Off duty East London policeman saved by his tactical training

An off-duty East London policeman has used his tactical training to deal with five suspects who tried to rob him while he was fishing at Nahoon River Valley.

Captain Nkosikho Mzuku says the incident happened around 7.30 on Wednesday morning.

Three of the suspects were armed with guns and two with knives.

He says the off-duty policeman shot and overpowered the suspects, leading to a chase which also involved members of the dog unit.

A  20-year-old suspect, who suffered a gunshot wound as well as bite wounds from the police dog, was arrested and will appear in the East London Magistrate's Court soon on a charge of attempted robbery.

Captain Mzuku says the other four suspects are still at large and more arrests are imminent.
