An off-duty police sergeant was shot and killed in the main street of the Mount Frere CBD.
Police Spokesperson Captain Edith Mjoko says the incident happened at about 5 am on Saturday morning.
The 34-year-old sergeant, who was attached to the Mount Frere detective unit, was found with gunshots in his upper body.
Eastern Cape police management condemned the attack and sent their condolences to his loved ones and friends.
Mjoko says the motive for the attack is unknown at this stage and officers are combing the area for any clues.
Anybody who might have information or who witnessed the attack is urged to contact SAPS.
Mjoko says all information will be treated with the strictest confidentiality.
