An off duty police constable was killed in Cala, near Queenstown on Friday night.
Police Spokesperson Colonel Sibongile Soci says the 44 year old Joshua Gungqa was at a grocery store when six armed men entered.They demanded money and fired several shots.Gungqa placed himself on duty and was fatally wounded in the process.He was also robbed of his state firearm.
Soci says one suspect was also killed and his firearm confiscated.Police are investigating a case of murder and armed robbery.
SAPS management expressed their deepest condolences to the Gungqa family.
