Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande has welcomed the decision by the trade union Nehawu to end its seven week long strike at Walter Sisulu University.
The union said on Friday that its members had accepted a five percent wage offer from university management.
The strike led to the closure of Walter Sisulu University's four campuses.
In a statement, Minister Blade Nzimande, said the parties had demonstrated leadership by taking the institution's long term viability into consideration.
"We commend university management and the unions for demonstrating leadership by ensuring that the decisions made take into consideration the long-term viability of the university and do not threaten the significant gains made over the past two years," Nzimande said.
WSU employees are expected to return to work on Monday, when classes are also scheduled to resume.
Nehawu said the agreement reached would result in workers receiving a five percent annual increase backdated to January 1.
