Nzimande to lead road safety initiatives in EC

Transport Minister, Dr Blade Nzimande, will be visiting Nelson Mandela Bay on Monday.

He will be joined by Eastern Cape Transport MEC, Weziwe Tikana, in leading road safety activation programmes in the Eastern Cape.

The Transport Department said that the "activations form part of the long weekend period which covers Freedom Day on Friday, 27 April and Workers' Day celebrations on 1 May respectively".

"Minister Nzimande's visit to the Eastern Cape follows the release of the 2018 Preliminary Easter Road Safety report in Cape Town last week", said Department spokesperson, Ishmail Mnisi.

He said the report indicated that the Eastern Cape province had the fourth highest fatalities in the country at 59.

"The Minister will start the day (Monday) by visiting families of people who lost loved ones to road crashes and beneficiaries of the Road Accident Fund (RAF), a post-crash consoling arm of government.  Minister Nzimande will also engage with motorists, passengers and pedestrians at different spots, highlighting and emphasising the importance of their safety on the road during the long weekend," Mnisi said.
