Numsa tyre strike enters 10th day

The strike by members of the metal workers union at Continental Tyres in Port Elizabeth entered its 10th day on Thursday.

Numsa regional secretary, Phumzile Ndongwe says they are not satisfied with the company's wage proposal to workers.

He says Continental is reluctant to meet their demands.

"The company brought forward a proposal which we are not happy with. It is one of many proposals that have resulted in the strike action. We are not happy. We want the company to "pay time and a half" on Saturday and double time on Sunday's." he said.

Continental Human Resource Manager, Attie Higgs, says they have attempted to get shifts started but to no avail.

"At the moment we do not have any production at the plant. It has been shut down and we have attempted a couple of times to get shifts started. The gates then get barricaded, we therefore went to the High Court in order to prevent them from blocking the gates" he said
