The Department of Energy would make an announcement on South Africa’s nuclear build future within the next two months Energy Minister Ben Martins said Monday morning.
The first new nuclear power station, Nuclear 1,is expected to be built at Thyspunt near Oyster Bay if the go ahead is given.
Martins said that towards the end of last year, an inter-departmental team that had the task of preparing for the nuclear build programme had conducted study visits to a number of countries that had expertise in the nuclear field.
Countries that had expertise in the nuclear field such as the United States, Japan and Russia were visited, while technologies available in this sector were also looked at.
He said a report had been prepared and would be given to the inter-departmental committee chaired by President Jacob Zuma.
Zuma said in his State of the Nation Address that the procurement process would start this year.
“A definite announcement in regard to progress should be made in about two months’ time, maximum,” Martins said.
