The National Sea Rescue Institute says sky lanterns, sometimes called Chinese lanterns, are a hazard in every way.
The NSRI says on its website when they float out to sea, they are often reported as emergency flares and cause Sea Rescue hours of fruitless searching.
It says should lanterns float inland and come down before their fuel blocks are completely extinguished, they could cause fires.
The NSRI says they are once again appealing to the public not to set off Chinese lanterns for these reasons, and for the possible aviation risk they may pose.
